The words of the visiting speaker to the Pastors’ Conference really challenged him. “Even if it means walking to a village to share the Gospel with the people there, that could be your calling!” Sergiu could not get those words out of his mind. The American guest was seeking to encourage the Romanian Pastors present that day, that they did not all need big churches.
Sergiu had only been converted five years before, at the age of forty-one. The year was 1987. Up to this point in his life Sergiu had been an atheist and a professional dancer and performer. He had travelled all over Europe with his dance band. Because of the miraculous change in his life Sergiu’s wife, Viorica, was also converted and he was able to lead his eighty eight year old father to the Lord as well.
Sergiu took the speaker’s words to heart and began to preach in the village of Saoaieu where he was born. Every Sunday for the next five years, Sergiu walked over twelve miles to preach in the church and then walked home again, before he was able to buy a bicycle.
Today Sergiu, who is supported by SGA, is able to travel by car, purchased for him through SGA’s Vehicle Project, to the three churches that he pastors in Miersig, Sititelec and Saoaieu. The work is hard and only the elderly people are left in the villages as the young people gravitate to the cities or to the West looking for employment opportunities. However, Sergiu is pressing on with the work and is seeing real blessing. He is encouraged to have some men who can now preach and help lead the work.
Sergiu is so thankful for the opportunity he had to study at the School of the Prophets in Oradea, some years ago, and is able to use those lectures in his ministry today. In the village of Miersig a new church building is nearing completion, which will help with the work there. SGA has gladly funded this building to meet the need. “This was another miracle,” explained Sergiu. “We were trying to buy a site in the village when a farmer who is an Orthodox believer came to us and offered a plot of land free of charge. It was in the perfect position in the village.”
Because of Sergiu’s faithfulness to God’s call many years ago, the work of the Gospel has continued in three small villages in Romania and precious souls have been won for the Lord.
